Express finish fourth in Gail Wicks tournamentTell North Platte what you think

The 16U North Platte Express fast-pitch team competed in the annual Gail Wick's Memorial Tournament Saturday and Sunday, finishing in fourth place.

North Platte entered the 18U division and went 2-1 in the opening rounds of pool play.

The Express defeated the Colorado Pony Express 16A, fell to the 18U Elkhorn Slammers, and bounced back to shutout the 18U Lexington Waatas.

In tournament play, North Platte drew Lexington for game one of the bracket.

North Platte scored seven runs in the first three innings to put the game away early. The final score was 12-0.

A two-run double by Mikenzi Wiseman and an error in the first inning supplied the first runs for North Platte.

In the game, Wiseman racked up four RBIs for North Platte, going 3-3 at the plate, with two doubles.

North Platte's Kaite Franzen kept Lexington off the scoreboard for four innings. She allowed no runs on two hits and struck out three batters.

North Platte increased its lead with four runs in the third. Christina Yoshida and Reanna Crane scored on an error and then Wiseman singled, scoring Aura Adkisson.

North Platte tacked on another five runs in the fourth. Adkisson kicked things off with a double, scoring Yoshida. That was followed by aWiseman double, scoring Adkisson.


In game two, North Platte faced Elkhorn with the winner moving on to the championship and the loser heading to the consolation game.

Christina Yoshida gave North Platte a boost, but it wasn't enough to get past Elkhorn, as North Platte lost 5-3 in five innings.

Yoshida went 1-2 and scored a run.


North Platte faced Pony Express in the consolation game.

North Platte built an early edge, but Pony Express roared back to steal a 5-4 victory on the last play of the game.

North Platte led until the fifth inning, but Pony Express worked its way back to take the lead and the win on an RBI single.

North Platte's Aura Adkisson & Sally Hengen hit well in the game. Adkisson went 2-3, drove in a run and scored one run. She singled in both the second and third innings. Hengen also went 2-3 and drove in a run. She singled in the first and doubled in the fifth.

Next, North Platte will be in action at home Thursday in a double-header against Gothenburg. Then they will travel to Rapid City, S.D. for the Mt. Rushmore Classic on June 22-23.
