National Guard helps fight Colorado firesTell North Platte what you think

The Nebraska Emergency Management Agency received a request for aerial suppression from the state of Colorado to assist in fighting wildfires near Colorado Springs, Colo.

In response, the State of Nebraska will send one Nebraska Army National Guard UH-60 Black Hawk helicopter with a Bambi Bucket -- a specialized bucket suspended on a cable carried by a helicopter -- to deliver water for aerial firefighting.

A four-person flight crew will assist in aerial suppression of fires. Additionally, one helicopter crew chief will also be sent.

NEMA arranged the sharing of resources through the Emergency Management Assistance Compact, which is the nation's state-to-state mutual aid system.

“Nebraska is always happy to assist other states in a time of an emergency,” said Earl Imler, response and recovery section manager.

The soldiers are members of the Lincoln-based Company C, 2-135th General Support Aviation Battalion. They were scheduled to arrive in Denver at noon mountain time on Saturday.
