Both games went into extra innings. North Platte won the first in eight innings, 9-8, and Hastings won the second in 10 by a score of 11-8.

In the first game, North Platte (13-9) got out to a 4-0 lead by scoring a pair of runs in each of the first two innings.

But Hastings scored three in the bottom half of the second to get back into the game and both teams battled.

In the bottom of the fifth, Hastings tied the game at seven runs apiece on Brady Staton's one-out sacrifice fly to center field.

Hastings then took its first lead of the game in the next inning on a sacrifice bunt by Mason Spilinek.

But in the top of the seventh, Drew Beyer led off with a double to right field and he took third base on a wild pitch by Spilinek.

Riley Vieyra then flied out to center field. Beyer tried to tag up for the tying run but the throw from Will Reimer came quickly to the cut-off man Spilinek and Beyer raced back to third. Spilinek, trying to get Beyer out at third, made a wild throw to allow Beyer to come across to tie the game.

In the eighth inning, Jack Kenny led off with a single off of Matt Karloff, who relieved the starter, Spilinek, and Luke Volz followed with a triple to score what would be the game-winning hit.

Ty Brockmoller, who came in during the seventh inning, threw his second straight scoreless inning for the First Nationals in the eighth. But it wasn't easy. With two outs and the bases loaded, he got Anthony Niederklein to pop up to Vieyra at third base to win the game.

"We did a good job in the first game," said North Platte coach Rick Ostergard. "It was a good game and we competed well."

North Platte started well in the second game, as well. The Nationals led 4-1 after an RBI single by Beyer in the third inning.

But in the fourth inning, Hastings chased starting pitcher Darian Allberry and they tied the game at 4-4 with a sacrifice by Reimer.

Hastings took the lead in the next inning with an RBI by Alex Panganiban and they scored two more in the sixth with Karloff's two-run double to right-center.

But the First Nationals tied the game in the bottom of the sixth by scoring three runs.

Each team scored a run in the seventh to force extra innings.

In the top of the 10th, Hastings took the lead when Jonah Schulz drew a bases loaded walk from Brockmoller, who came in for the second straight game in the seventh. Spilinek then scored two more with a single up the middle to make it 11-8.

In the bottom half of the inning, Panganiban, who came in during the sixth, threw his fourth consecutive scoreless inning to give Hastings the split.

"It was discouraging that we had 16 hits and it still wasn't enough to win," Ostergard said. "We hit well in both games but we didn't do a good enough job of it in the last four innings."
