For the third straight year, the Miss Nebraska judges selected a contestant from western Nebraska to wear the crown -- JaCee Pilkington of Minatare/Bayard.

Pilkingtonís selection capped a three-day contest for the coveted crown. Sixteen contestants vied for the honor.

Last year, Mariah Cook of Chadron was selected and the year before, Teresa Scanlan of Gering won. Scanlan made history when she won the Miss America pageant that year.

Scanlan was in North Platte for the final night of the contest.

Pilkington, 21, is a student at Doane College. She sang during the competition and talked about her platform issue -- Operation Remember Me, an effort to help combat veterans return with the honor that is due them.

Pilkington is the sixth woman from the Panhandle area in the past seven years to become Miss Nebraska.

This year, Miss Chadron Meghan Thalken was selected as fourth runner-up and Miss Northwest Megan Dimmitt was third.

Aleah Peters of Omaha was the second runner-up and Rachel Foehlinger, representing Lake McConaughy, was first runner-up. Foehlinger will take over for Pilkington if for some reason she cannot fulfill her obligations as Miss Nebraska.

Outstanding teen

Samantha Washington of Omaha was crowned Miss Nebraska Outstanding Teen 2013 on Friday. Morgan Holen of Lincoln was the second runner up and JaLee Pilkington of Bayard, Miss Nebraskaís sister, was third.

There were 12 contestants in the outstanding teen contest.
