Seniors coach Rick Ostergard said the win over Hays was the first complete game his team has had this year.

"This was a great all-around game," said Ostergard. "We had some good games this year but this was our best because we had good pitching, hitting and defense."

North Platte (11-7) got a good outing from starting pitcher Ben Sukraw who threw four scoreless innings. Sukraw scattered hits and most of his outs came on fly balls in the outfield where the speedy trio of Alex Harms, Darian Allberry and Alec Wesslund were there to make the catch.

"I thought Ben did an excellent job," Ostergard said. "He kept their hitters off-balance and he got a lot of pop-ups. It's what we needed him to do tonight."

In the fourth inning, the First Nationals took the lead when Ty Brockmoller grounded into a fielder's choice with the bases loaded and one out.

But in the fifth inning, Hays tied the game with Hayden Hutchison's RBI single into left field.

Dalton Pflughaupt came on for Sukraw shortly thereafter. He walked Marcus Altman to load the bases and then Cameron Klaus to give Hays the 2-1 lead.

The Nationals tied the game back up in the bottom half of the inning when Hays pitcher Clayton Basgall made a wild pitch with the bases loaded.

In the bottom of the sixth, North Platte regained the lead on Bradey Anderson's bases loaded bloop single over second base off of Brady Bieker, who came on for Basgall in the inning.

With one out in the top of the seventh, Klaus hit a line drive single to right off Brockmoller, who relieved Pflughaupt, to tie the game at 3-3.

With two out in the bottom of the seventh, Volz hit a line drive base hit to left near the foul line. He had at least second base, but an errant throw gave him third.

And another throwing error to third base gave him the opportunity to take home and win the game for the First Nationals.

"Luke comes in and hits a nice double and for whatever reason, they decided to throw it around," said Ostergard. "It was a good deal for us. We'll take it."

Seniors beat Valentine

On Friday night, the Seniors opened their annual home tournament by beating Valentine 11-2.

The First Nationals jumped on Valentine early with four runs in the first inning.

Valentine answered back with two of their own in the second inning but it was the closest they got.

In the third, North Platte scored four more to make it 8-2 before adding two more in the fourth and another in the fifth.

Darian Allberry and Volz split the work for the Seniors on the mound.
