Bricks in the Walk of Honor

Honorary bricks for the 20th Century Veterans Memorial in North Platte will be reordered after the latest order of 38 turned up missing.

The bricks, each engraved with the name of a veteran, were delivered on April 25 to the Pawnee Assisted Living Hotel, where the 20th Century Veteran’s Memorial office is located.

The plan was to have the bricks installed in the Walk of Honor at the memorial in time for the Memorial Day service on Monday.

An employee at the hotel signed for the 40-pound box. They were left in the lobby, but they were nowhere to be found when secretary Wilma Salisbury went to get them.

Salisbury said that was the way previous orders have been handled without any trouble.

Why anyone would want to steal the bricks is a mystery. They are only about an inch thick. The back side is rough, so they aren’t apt to have been turned around and used elsewhere.

They might have been moved into a storage room of the hotel, but the hotel maintenance man has searched for them without success, Salisbury said.

She said the value of the order is about $1,200.

“We just have no idea where they were placed,” she said. “The bricks were sitting there waiting for me to come, and evidently someone moved them off to some other place,” she said.

Salisbury said she will have to reorder the 38 bricks if they don’t turn up soon. The bricks would be recast and engraved and shipped again. She hopes they can be installed by the end of June.

More than 6,000 memorial bricks are already installed in the Walk of Honor, with room for another 2,200, Salisbury said.

Memorial bricks make a good gift for any veteran, she said. Any U.S. soldier who served honorably at any time is eligible.
