Good employer is hard to findTell North Platte what you think

Perhaps I am showing my age, but does anyone else remember the good old days when decent employers were the norm, not the extremely rare exception?

Savvy employers used to know that offering a decent wage, benefits and work environment went a long way in creating productive employees. And productive employees create a healthy bottom line in two ways: satisfied customers and less time and money wasted on turnover, hiring and training.

Providing benefits was never required by law, but now that it seems it soon will be, employers are threatening to cut their employees to part time so they don’t have to pay. Many are shamelessly taking advantage of the current economic crisis and only offer part-time work and those few hours stretched out over as much as six days a week, thus effectively ruining an employee’s chance of picking up a second part-time job elsewhere to bring a full-time salary.

I know of employees today who are suffering from bullying, verbal and even physical abuse on-the-job because they fear the job they have is better than nothing at all. Employers used to set the example as to workplace conduct. Now they are the worst offenders. Why must the workplace feel like a war zone?

Shame on you employers. Have you forgotten that loyalty works both ways? Are ethical employers with character and basic human decency just another relic from the past, like so many of our other American dreams?
