Juniors sweep ColumbusTell North Platte what you think

The North Platte First National Bank Juniors swept Columbus 11-1 and 14-5 on Wednesday at Bill Wood Field.

Juniors assistant coach Luke Ostergard said that North Platte played two complete games.

"I was really pleased," said Ostergard. "I am really impressed with my team. Pitching, we hit all the spots we needed to. We also hit well and on defense, we had a couple of errors but for the most part, we did what we needed to."

In the first game, Columbus scored the first run in the bottom of the first inning, but that was all they could muster against pitcher Kevin Hancock.

In the second, Braiden Ruffin tied the game for the First Nationals (4-1) with a one-out single to center field.

North Platte then took the lead for good in the fourth on a Marcus Silos sacrifice fly that scored Hancock, who led off the inning with a triple to right-center.

In the fifth, the Nationals broke the game open by scoring six runs and chasing Columbus started Miles Putnam from the game.

In the second game, the First Nationals scored the first three runs. But in the fourth inning, Columbus answered back with five runs to take a two-run lead.

But North Platte took the lead back in the bottom half of the inning. Ruffin scored the first run of the rally on a balk by Benne. Then with two outs, Jace Barker gave the First Nationals the lead with a two-run single to right.

Zach Smith came on for Benne after the Barker base hit and he walked Hancock to load the bases. Silos then cleared them with a double to give North Platte a 9-5 lead.

The Nationals finished the day by scoring five runs in the sixth inning before Devan Hovden came on for starter Jayden Kruse and struck out the side in the seventh to finish the game.
