When the hit and run was reported, the police contacted the suspect vehicle’s registered owner, who told police he had sold the Honda Civic to suspect, Edward L. Roney, 32, of Missouri a few days earlier, according to a police report.

The Honda was later discovered on East E. St. By then, Roney was believed to be driving a Toyota RAV, which the police found, along with Roney, in the 1100 block of E. 12th around 7:45 p.m.

Roney was also found with a concealed weapon, a knife, Police Information Officer Rodney Brown said.

Following further investigation, prescription drugs and stolen property were also discovered in the vehicle.

Roney was arrested and charged with several crimes -- felony possession of a controlled substance (prescription drugs), possession of concealed weapon and stolen property, unauthorized use of a motor vehicle, leaving the scene of a non-injury accident and failure to sign a citation.

Roney is also wanted in two other states - Oklahoma and Missouri -- according to sheriff's records.

Investigators also found Cortney Lopez, 24, who was reportedly a passenger in the vehicle, with a controlled substance. She was booked into jail along with Roney.

Lida Weekly of North Platte was driving the car that was hit at Casey's. Her Honda Pilot sustained an estimated $1,100 in damages.

Priors

Roney was arraigned in mid-March on a charge of flight to avoid prosecution.

When Lincoln County Judge Kent Turnbull asked Roney when he was last employed, he replied “never.”

Deputy Lincoln County Attorney Austen Leighty asked for a $10,000 bond. Turnbull was surprised at the relatively low bond request from the county attorney’s office partly because Roney has an active warrant from Missouri for failure to appear on charges of burglary, felon in possession of a firearm and armed criminal action.

Roney told the court that he had no possible way of raising any bond money.

He served 13 days on that charge, according to jail records.

Lopez too

Cortney Lopez, 24, of North Platte, was also arraigned in mid-March on two counts of possession of methamphetamine and one count of illegal possession of a legend drug (klonopin).

Lopez was arrested at Burger King. Officers searched her belongings and found the prescription pills. White residue located on drug paraphernalia tested positive for methamphetamine, police information officer Rodney Brown said.

Lopez was also held because she violated the conditions of her release from jail while she awaited proceedings to begin in district court, where she faced a previous possession charge.

Lopez served 26 days from March 15 until April 10. Two days later she was picked up for possession again and served 17 days. She was released April 29.

Lopez has been arrested more than 10 times in three years.
