In Oregon, medical insurance companies balked and lowered their rates as soon as a new marketplace exchange opened, created under Obamacare.

The Oregonian newspaper reported Friday that two insurance dropped their rates one day after they submitted them so they could be competitive with other posted rates.

The state insurance exchange aims to give people a look at rates for all kinds of medical coverage.

The first version of the comparison exchange went live on Thursday. The state of Oregon plans to add more comparisons by October, according to the exchange website.

According to the Oregonian, one health insurer wanted to charge “$169 a month to cover a 40-year-old Portland-area non-smoker.”

Another company wanted “$422 a month for the same standard plan” – an example of wide variation in prices.

Under federal “Obamacare” reforms that take effect in January, health insurance is mandated and every insurer must offer certain standard plans.

States can set up their own insurance exchanges or let the federal government do it. Nebraska has opted to let the federal government do it.

The Oregon website is HERE. It offers a question and answer page, as well as relatively recent rates filed by carriers and approved by the state.
