UP trains collide in IowaTell North Platte what you think

Train wreckage on a mainline section of track in central Iowa was cleared Friday, after a Union Pacific collision closed the line for more than 24 hours.

A coal train collided with and sideswiped a sitting train of cargo containers near Grand Junction, Iowa, about 60 miles northwest of Des Moines, according to news reports there.

As the two trains were passing, coal cars from the eastbound train evidently came off the track and crashed into the westbound train of shipping containers, driving 35 cars down a short bank on the south side of the tracks and into the road ditch, according to WHO-TV in Des Moines.

The 6 a.m. wreck closed the double set of tracks until Friday morning, halting traffic into and out of Chicago, the Associated Press reported.

The derailment shut down a section of double mainline for more than 24 hours, as crews worked feverishly to clear and repair the tracks. At 12:30 p.m. Friday, the Carroll Broadcasting Company online reported that the tracks were open.

CBC reported that rews replaced 500 feet of the south track and 400 feet of the north track.
