Stepdad Trevor Perry was arrested Friday in the drowning of three-year-old Landon Schroeder.

Perry and Landon went fishing all afternoon Monday on the east side of North Platt. At some point the boy got into the water and Perry was inattentive and negligent, according to a sheriff's statement.

Perry was charged Friday with child abuse, a Class II felony, punishable by up to 50 years in prison.

According to the sheriff, deputies learned that Perry and Landon were at the remote fishing spot from noon until at least 6:30 p.m. At some point during the afternoon, Perry became inattentive for an extended period of time, investigators said.

Perry found Landon unconscious underwater, about 15 feet from the shore, investigators said. He retrieved Landon from the water but did not call for help. Instead, he collected all of his gear and Landon and walked from the area to his vehicle parked on the U.S. Highway 30 bypass, according to investigators.

Perry put his gear and Landon into the vehicle and drove home, whilie Landon remained unconscious, investigators said.

When Perry got home, Landonís mother immediately recognized the danger and rushed Landon to Great Plains Regional Medical Center, the statement said.

Perry was jailed around 12:30 p.m. Friday.

Landon Schroeder was rescusitated Monday night in the emergency room of Great Plains Regional Medical Center in North Platte and flown by emergency helicopter to Denver Children's Hospital, where he has been recovering.

He was conscious and his vital signs were greatly improved Thursday morning but he remains in danger.

A "Prayers for Landon" Facebook page has more than 3,500 likes as of Friday afternoon, when a family member posted "Keep praying everyone! Landons fight is far from over. Let's give him the strength he needs! We appreciate everything you all are doing!"

Earlier Friday, the results of an MRI scan showed "a little sketch" on Landon's brain, according to the Facebook page, but family members are not sure what part or if its new or old.

A ventilator and a catheter were expected to be removed Friday.

The investigation is ongoing, the spokesman said.
