Saturday is the 21st anniversary of one of America’s traditional days of giving – the Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive from the National Association of Letter Carriers.

Each year on the second Saturday of May, letter carriers across the county collect non-perishable food donations from customers. The donations go directly to local food pantries to provide food to people in need, and there are many in North Platte who need our help, said Diane McConnell, a letter carrier in North Platte.

Last year, the food drive gathered more than 70 million pounds of food, feeding an estimated 30 million people, organizers said. Over the 20 years of the food drive, a grand total of 1.2 billion pounds has been collected, thanks to an universal delivery network that spans the entire nation.

The need is great. Currently, 50 million Americans – 1 in 6 – are unsure where their next meal is coming from. Children in these households fell hunger’s impact on their overall health and ability to perform in school. Nearly 3 million seniors over age 65 must deal with hunger too, with many on fixed imcome too embarrassed to ask for help, organizers said.

Particiapting is simple. Just leave a non-perishable food donation in a bag by your mailbox on Saturday and your letter carrier will pick it up.

Examples include:

• Peanut butter

• Canned soup

• Canned meats and fish

• Canned vegetables, fruits and juices

• Boxed goods

• Pasta and rice
