Accused thief Stanley Churchwell, 27, of North Platte, was arraigned on another charge Tuesday – first degree sexual assault. Prosecutors said Churchwell assaulted a girl under 16 back on July 1. Deputy Lincoln County Attorney Austen Leighty asked for a $500,000 bond. He said there was more to the case than just sex assault; it included violence.
Lincoln County Judge appointed Patrick Hays as defense attorney and set the bond at $250,000, saying he doubted Hays would be able to pay the required 10 percent.
Churchwell has been in jail since February, held on a $25,000 bond. He has been in and out of the county jail many times. His arrest record shows numerous theft charges, fraud, forgery, false reporting, contempt of court, failure to appear, drug possession and burglary.
Most recently, Churchwell was charged with helping steal some car axles from a house and attempting to peddle them at a salvage yard.
That charge came just 17 days after Churchwell got out of jail on previous theft charge, for which he served 135 days.
