Lake Mac: Two-thirds fullTell North Platte what you think

At 63 percent capacity, Lake McConaughy is no longer rising and will probably stay steady due to lower than normal inflows.

That's the outlook that Civil Engineer Cory Steinke recently gave the board of directors of the Central Public Power and Irrigation District, which controls the dam at the lake.

April snows have been heavy in the mountains that feed the North Platte River and Lake McConaughy, but snowpack data is deceiving, Steinke said.

The deeper snowpack will not result in a great runoff.

Even though snowpack above Seminoe Reservoir in Wyoming is at 92 percent and snowpack above Glendo Reservoir in Wyoming is at 96 percent, that translates to only 55 percent of normal runoff for Lake McConaughy, Steinke said.

Steinke expects virtually no water will be spilled from upstream reservoirs on the North Platte River during the spring and summer season.

“Our only hope at this point is the South Platte River, but that is still an unknown,” he said.
