After one of the worst drought years in history, Sen. Mark Christensen of Imperial wants southern Nebraska farmers to be reimbursed.
Nebraska farmers might be reimbursed for surface water the state needs to meet obligations to Kansas, under a bill advanced Tuesday by Nebraska lawmakers.
The bill (LB 522), sponsored by Christensen, advanced on a 27-0 vote.
Senators plan to continue to amend the bill before it moves to final passage.
Christensen proposed the bill because residents of the Republican River Basin irrigation district in southern Nebraska lost much of their surface water in the river during last year’s extreme drought.
