North Platte American Legion Baseball has had a long and distinguished run in North Platte since the program officially started around 1960.
Hundreds of players and fans, along with dozens of coaches and others truly dedicated to the program have been involved and the board of directors decided a Hall of Fame to honor outstanding individuals should be started.
The inaugural class includes two coaches, two players and two individuals who donated countless hours to making North Platte American Legion Baseball all that it is, Legion spokesman Pete Volz said.
The first class of inductees are George Lebedz, Chuck Francis, Lynn Stockall, Chuck Schwartz, Bill Hays and Shawn Fleck.
Future plans are to include other deserving individuals and teams that enjoyed extraordinary success.
Nominations may be sent to P.O. Box 628, North Platte, NE 69103.
A Hall of Fame weekend will begin at 4:30 p.m. Friday May 3 at Bill Wood Field with an intra-squad scrimmage of the current Legion teams, followed by an alumni v. alumni game at 7:30 p.m.
Between innings, the inductees will honored. Admission is free.
The weekend continues Saturday May 4, when the American Legion 4-person golf scramble will begin at Lake Maloney golf course with a shotgun start at 12:30 p.m.
Following the golf tournament, a banquet honoring the 2013 Hall of Fame inductees will be held.
The golf tournament cost is $65, which includes the banquet. Or, tickets are $15 for just the banquet.
All past Legion players are invited to come out and participate, and the entire community is welcome, Volz said.
The regular season for the First Nationals begins Saturday, May 18 when the Seniors travel to Scottsbluff. The Juniors host Scottsbluff at home at 1 p.m.
Both teams will be home against McCook on Monday, May 20, with the first pitch for the juniors at 5:30 p.m. and the senior game to follow.
