Photographer Demetria Stephens followed 41 fourth graders from Ravenna Elementary School Tuesday on their visit. The group got up about 6 a.m. to drive to Lincoln to spend about an hour and a half at the capitol building, the iconic Tower on the Plains.

Students looked at murals, laid on their backs to gaze up at the rotunda, visited the Warner Legislative Chamber and sat in spectator booths at the Nebraska Supreme Court chamber.

Jamison Wyatt, the tour guide, said he starts with a skeleton schedule of the tour and adds specific historical dates and people.

“It’s right up the alley for the fourth graders because they’re learning Nebraska history,” Wyatt said. “They’re learning things they should be learning already.”

Students could not go to the top of the tower because the elevator is under renovation. Bob Ripley of the Office of the Capitol Commission said elevator renovation began in early 2012 and will be finished in 2014. Six people can ride the elevator at a time and two elevators go to the top.
