Some got their message across in slam poetry, others used songs and prayer, according to a Nebraska Watchdog report.

The hearing, held by the U.S. State Department, lasted 11 hours. Opponents outnumbered supporters by 12-1, according to the opposition group Bold Nebraska.

Well organized opponents wore red and white shirts and stood in support of speakers. Supporters, many of them union workers, were also organized. They wore orange, green and blue shirts representing welders, fitters and plumbers who would build the pipeline, according to the Watchdog report.

When supporters spoke, opponents held up black armbands to voice their disagreement.

Opponents have submitted 800,000 written comments to the State Department, said Jane Kleeb, the leader of Bold Nebraska.
