Nineteen 4-H members were awarded ribbons at an area 4-H Public Speaking Contest that was held April 14 at Gandy, east of Stapleton.Youth from ages 5 -19 have an opportunity to participate in the 4-H Public Speaking program from county to state levels.
4-H members in three divisions -- Junior (8 to 10 years of age) Intermediate (11 to 12 years of age) and Senior (13 to 18 years of age) were required to prepare an original speech about 4-H. The top three in each division will represent their respective county at one of four regional 4-H speaking contests.
The top three county winners in each age division will also compete in the regional contest on April 27.
• Junior Speech Division – Autumn Hindman of Lincoln County. Caleb Burnside, Hannah Burnside, and Aiden Trimble of Logan County.
• Intermediate Speech Division – Kaylee Burnside of Logan County.
• Senior Speech Division – Kensie Burnside of Logan County.
Former 4-H members have said that participation in 4-H public speaking has helped them develop skills that have benefited them in high school, college and on the job.
By learning how to present a speech, youth develop organizational skills, as well as communication skills. Being able to present your ideas effectively helps build confidence. The 4-H public speaking contest is sponsored by the Nebraska Rural Radio Network, which includes KRVN, KNEB, and KTIC. They provide the ribbons, a $25 cash award for the top four winners in the senior division of the regional contests who participate in the state contest and special awards for the top state speech and PSA winners.

• Champion Novice Speech – Keali Florea.
