One of the statefs largest health events, National Walk at Lunch Day, will be held April 24 at the corner of Fourth and Jeffers in North Platte.Walks will also be held in Sutherland and Ogallala.
The walk has grown each year since it began in 2007. Last year, more than 366 organizations and nearly 37,000 people participated nationwide.
This year, participating organizations will support statewide hiking and biking trails. For every organization that registers, Blue Cross Blue Shield of Nebraska will donate $20 to the Nebraska Game and Parks Foundation.
Western Insurors and Husker Radio in North Platte are co-sponsors and want to be a part of supporting the trails and promote healthier living with the help of the North Platte community.
gWe encourage local businesses to build a team of co]workers and call our office to pre]register at 532]4060," said Western Insurors Office Manager Carrie Brown. Western Insurors will register walkers with BCBSNE in order to provide a head count of the North Platte participants. We will gather at the corner of Fourth and Jeffers any time between 11]1 p.m. on April 24."
The Western Insurors staff will hand out a healthy lunch in insulated coolers to participants. On a side note, Western Insurors in Ogallala and the Thomas Agency of Sutherland will also host a walk at their locations, Brown said.
gBeing healthy and exercising often takes the back seat due to time constraints,h Brown said. It was discovered that one lap around our court house is approximately a quarter of a mile. You can walk four times around and get in a mile and still have plenty of time for lunch.
Organizers hope this will become a trend for North Platte. Instead of walking around the court house one time a year people will start doing it on a regular basis.
gI would love to look out our business window and see our downtown neighbors walking around the court house,h Brown said. gThe nice thing about it is you donft have to worry about traffic or stop lights, so you can keep up your pace.h
