'60s to be featured at Open Mic NiteTell North Platte what you think

It was the 1960s.

The Beatles; Rolling Stones; Dylan; Joni Mitchell; Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young; Aretha Franklin; Doors; Santana; Bryds; Beach Boys… all started in the 1960s.

Elvis continued to reign as King. Peter, Paul and Mary and the New Christy Minstrels brought folk music to the mainstream. Roy Orbison sang Pretty Woman.

The Temptations perfected a long tradition of doo-wop and soul music. English rockers brought Mississipi blues to the fore. Buck Owens and Johnny Cash sang riveting country songs, such as (Buck’s) Act Naturally and Cryin’ Time and (Johnny’s) Ring of Fire and Boy Named Sue.

Woodstock happened.

Kurt Vonnegut, Ken Kesey, Tom Wolfe and Shel Silverstein lit bookshelves with spirited as well as spiritual tales. Poets were too numerous to mention. Comics were plentiful.

We will journey down these memory lanes Friday at Open Mic Nite at A to Z Books downtown, celebrating music, literature, art (& tie dyes, boots & sandals) of the 60s.

The Bulletin and the bookstore host the event. George Lauby is the emcee.

The doors are open the the public invited. Head bands, boots and beads are in fashion.

Performances begin around 7 p.m. and continue until everyone plays out. Come for awhile or for the night. There will be some refreshments. Feel free to bring something of your choice.

A freewill donations of $2-5 is appreciated but not necessary.

Rock on brothers and sisters.
