On Saturday, April 6 about 11 p.m., North Platte Police took a report of a stolen pickup from the Denny’s restaurant parking lot at the Newberry Road access to Interstate-80.

The pickup was a blue 1998 Chevy S10.

A few hours later, around 6 a.m. Sunday, the North Platte Fire Department was summoned to a grass fire on South Moran Canyon Road, 2.5 miles south of State Farm Road. North Platte firefighters asked the Maxwell volunteer fire department to assist.

Around 7:40 a.m., the Lincoln County sheriff’s deputies were also called to the grass fire. The Chevy S10 was found in the bottom of the canyon.

The pickup evidently caused the fire, according to a sheriff’s statement, burning nearly five acres of grass and cedar trees. The vehicle was a total loss.

Deputies found a set of keys at the scene that they thought belonged the thieves, and they tracked them to Jacob Refior, 19, who was brought in for questioning on Tuesday.

“It was found that Mr. Refior and another subject had stolen the vehicle from Denny’s,” the sheriff's statement said.

Refior and another unnamed person allegedly took the pickup on a joy ride that ended when the vehicle got stuck in a ditch along the road and started the grass on fire, the sheriff said.

Refior is from North Platte. He was charged with theft of the vehicle and other charges, cited and released. Officers are looking for the other person.

Alcohol was involved in this case, the statement said.
