Madison Middle School
Discussions are underway to move North Platte’s sixth graders to Madison Middle School and put all the seventh and eighth graders in Adams.
That way, sixth graders would all receive the same instruction and get the support they need as they come together from North Platte’s 10 elementary schools, Superintendent Marty Bassett said.
Another advantage is that 7th and 8th graders would be together as a class, eliminating the get-acquainted process during the critical freshman year in high school.
School officials say freshman students who fail a class tend to drop out of high school before they graduate.
Bassett said the intent is to improve academics.
“At this point we are gathering information," he said.
Public meetings will be held next week at both middle schools to discuss the prospect of the reconfiguring.
A public meeting will be held at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, April 16 at Madison and at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday, April 18 at Adams.
The school board has not discussed it yet. Bassett said the earliest the concept would be implemented, if the board approves, is the fall of 2014.
“We are asking for input at the meetings -- questions, concerns and the positive aspects of this idea,” Bassett said.
