College: Nine girls leave softball teamTell North Platte what you think

North Platte Community College officials spoke publicly for the first time Monday about the upheaval on the girls softball team.

Not much was said.

In the two-sentence announcement, college spokesman Chuck Salestrom said that Janelle Higgins, head women's softball coach announced Monday afternoon that nine players have chosen to leave the Lady Knights program, effective immediately.

They include: Ashley Campbell of Julesburg, Colo.; Hannah Allgood of Colorado Springs, Colo; KC Silva of California; Morgan Booth and Delaney Furnish of Kersey, Colo; Erin Beverage of Iowa; Morgan Keyzer of Canada; Sally Homan of Lexington; and Katie Borm of Wyoming.

"There is no further information available," Salestrom said.

The girls left Monday in protest of the practices of Higgins, leaving just nine players on the team.

As the Bulletin reported Monday, (see College team to keep playing with smaller roster), the last nine players took the field Monday for a double-header against Northeastern Junior College of Sterling.

The Lady Knights went 1-1 in the games.

Several parents told the Bulletin that the players left because they lost trust in Higgins.

The parents believe that Higgins harrassed and bullied players throughout the season, culminating with the confinement of four players on a team bus Saturday in Columbus.

More reports are posted on the Bulletin website.
