Convicted of back-to-back charges of drinking and driving and driving under suspension, 25-year-old Joshua Baker, received two penitentiary sentences Monday.

Baker, 25, was sentenced to 1.5-3 years on one charge and one year on the other, but the sentences will run concurrently. Baker received credit for 42 days he has spent in jail since his arrest. And, his license was suspended for 15 years to begin after he has served his sentence.

Baker has charged no less than 19 times in his life. Most charges have been for alcohol-related offenses.

According to jail records, his first charge was at age 15 for minor in possession. In December 2010, he was charged with stabbing another man outside a bar in North Platte. Police said Baker and Zachary Cooper were drunk and argued after Baker had made derogatory comments about a girlfriend or wife. The two men went outside for a round of fisticuffs during which Baker pulled a knife and stabbed Cooper in the abdomen. Cooper was treated for the wound at Great Plains Regional Medical Center and Baker was jailed.

Before sentencing, Lincoln County Attorney Rebecca Harling said Baker has had problems with the law since he was 10-years-old.

“You do have a terrible problem with alcohol and show no inclination to correct it,” District Judge Richard Birch said. “The pre-sentence investigation does not recommend probation and I agree that would do no good anyway.”
