Even though the North Platte Community College softball team was defeated twice Sunday, the team still finished in a tie for second place in the competitive Nebraska Community College Athletic Conference Tournament. The Knights lost a close game to the Southeast Community College Storm 9-8 and lost by five to the champion Central Community College Raiders, 13-8.
Central went 3-0 record in the tournament to earn the championship. The Lady Knights tied for second with Southeast Community College and McCook Community College, as all three finished with a 1-2 record.
Lydia Lusk, Tiffany Brasby, Siarra Velasquez and Rylee Murphy of North Platte were named to the All-Conference/Tournament team.
In the opening game against the Southeast Community College Storm Rylee Murphy, Katharine Savolt, Josilyn Richardson and Tiffany Brasby shared pitching duties in the 8-9 loss.
Siarra Velasquez led the Knights from the plate as she finished 4-5 with a double and an RBI. Savolt went 2-3 with two sacrifice flies, Brasby was 3-5, Richardson was 3-4 and Lydia Lusk added three sacrifices.
“We played a hard-fought game but just came up a little short,” said head coach Janelle Higgins.
In game two Sunday, the Knights fell 8-13 to Central Community College as they gave up nine unearned runs.
Briona Santovito took the loss for the Knights as she gave up seven hits. Velasquez had another huge game at the plate as she finished 2-3 with a homerun and four RBIs.
Brasby, Murphy and Soliel Atenza were 2-4 from the plate and Murphy had an RBI.
