Christopher L. Barber
A Cozad man is charged with a bevy of crimes after he allegedly hit a car and driving recklessly Friday on U.S. Highway 83.When Lincoln County Sheriff's Deputies responded to complaints, they found the driver Christopher Lee Barber was traveling more than 100 miles an hour on the highway as he drove north from Wellfleet to North Platte, according to a sheriff's statement.
Witnesses told investigators that Barber, 25, was passing cars, then “brake checking” (slamming on the breaks) when he got in front of them.
One woman said Barber hit her car while they were traveling at highway speeds, damaging both vehicles.
Deputies said they were able to get Barber stopped on the edge of North Platte, near the intersection of U.S. 83 and State Farm Road.
They administered numerous field sobriety maneuvers, all of which showed Barber was highly intoxicated, the sheriff said. A breath test showed his blood alcohol content was more than three times above the legal limit.
Compounding the charges, Barber was not using an interlock device on the vehicle, a device that tests a driver's breath before the car will start. It was installed because he had two prior offenses of driving while intoxicated.
He was driving a vehicle without the interlock device, which is illegal, the sheriff said.
Barber was jailed on several charges -- felony third offense DWI, felony driving without an interlock device, leaving the scene of an accident and willful reckless driving.
