The Tommy Dorsey Orchestra will perform at the North Platte High School performing arts center at 6 p.m. on Sunday, April 14.The Tommy Dorsey Orchestra is dedicated to the music of the late bandleader who was known as “The Sentimental Gentleman of Swing.”
In Big Band history, the Tommy Dorsey Orchestra was known as one of the best all-around dance bands. Dorsey was known as a master at creating warm, sentimental, and always musical moods – played at superb dancing and listening tempos.
Dorsey sustained these moods through the arrangements of the likes of Paul Weston, Axel Stordahl and Sy Oliver, and showcased singers who could project brilliantly. Singers for Dorsey’s orchestra included Frank Sinatra, Jack Leonard and Jo Stafford, among others.
Their biggest hits included “I’ll Never Smile Again”, “I’m Getting Sentimental Over You” and “Marie.”
All three songs have been inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame.
The music world lost Dorsey with his death in 1956, but his legacy of great music has transcended time. The orchestra repertoire continues to entertain audiences of all ages throughout the world.
The orchestra is led by Terry Myers. An Iowa native, Myers was a member of the U.S. Marine Corps Reserves for five years. After college, where he majored in music and education, Myers honed his musical talent and soon developed a successful career in Nashville and New York City.
Myers was a band leader at Disney World’s Epcot Center for four years.
In 1990, he became one of the original members of Bill Allred’s Classic
Jazz Band, performing at jazz festivals all over the United States, Europe, and Asia. He has appeared at the North Sea Festival in Holland, the Birmingham, England, Festival, the Cork Festival in Ireland, the Bern Festival in Switzerland and many others.
As a solo artist, Myers has also toured the world as a guest artist on both clarinet and saxophone.
Myers has performed with the Tommy Dorsey Orchestra, The Tex Beneke Orchestra, The Les Elgart Band, The Jimmy Dorsey Orchestra, Ray Charles, Don Lamond, Chubby Jackson, Louis Bellson, Bob Haggart, Jake Hanna, Butch Miles and many others.
In 1992, he formed and led a “Tribute to Benny Goodman” orchestra, which performed successfully for many years at such attractions as Busch Gardens in Florida and Virginia, Cypress Gardens and Silver Springs, as well as most of the major concert halls in Florida and across the country.
Now featured with the Tommy Dorsey Orchestra, Myers is an exceedingly charming host who puts the audience at ease and then wows them with his and the orchestra‘s musical presentation.
Tickets are available at the NPHS activities office, Da Buzz coffee shop, Adams Bank and Trust and the Westfield Pharmacy. The cost is $15. The concert is presented by the North Platte Municipal Band.
