An eastbound semi-truck ran square into the supporting post of the Hershey I-80 overpass Friday shortly after 6 p.m.
The truck went into the median and hit the support head on.
The driver, Carl Shane Peck, 43, of Utah survived but was badly injured. Rescue crews worked for nearly three hours to extricate him from the wreckage.
A medical helicopter was summoned and landed on the westbound lanes to take Peck to the hospital, according to Trooper Belgum of the Nebraska State Patrol.
Belgum said the truck apparently hit the overpass at full speed and did not waver in in its path, but the cause and speed have not been officially determined.
Peck was alone in the truck. Investigators suspect he went to sleep.
Rescue crews from Hershey and Sutherland responded.
I-80 traffic was restricted to one lane in each direction while rescuers worked. When Peck was finally extricated, both westbound lanes were closed before the helicopter arrived.
