Police Officer Levi Gibbs grew the biggest, fullest beard on the police force for the benefit of little Zoie Whyte, an infant who is fighting for her life.

Police officers organized a beard contest and raised $450 in support of Zoie, a 7-month-old North Platte girl. Beards were judged Wednesday.

Zoie is the daughter of Matt and Kellie Whyte of North Platte. She suddenly quit breathing Dec. 1 and was life-flighted to Denver Children's Hospital.

Doctors said Zoie had a near SIDS episode. She endured numerous tests and is undergoing therapy, Police Information Officer Rodney Brown said.

Zoie also has a twin brother, Jaxon, who is okay. Zoie has proven to be a fighter and is a true miracle, her family says.

In the beard contest, Gibbs grew the fullest beard, Officer Brandon Myers the softest, Animal Control Officer John Pettit was the best groomed and Chaplain Gary Smith had the grayest, and Investigator Roger Freeze had the best cropped.

Donations can be made to Wells Fargo Bank (315 N. Dewey) c/o Benefit Zoie Whyte.
