Some 700,000 defense civilian employees will have to take 14-day furloughs in coming weeks and months.

Hagel will give back the equivalent of 14 days pay to the government, Pentagon spokesman George Little said Tuesday. That comes to about $10,750, based on his salary of $199,700.

More than 700,000 civilian employees in the Defense Department will take unpaid furloughs as part of automatic spending cuts, known as sequestration.

After Hagelís announcement, President Obama followed, announcing the next day that he would donate 5% or $20,000 of his $400,000 salary to the government.

Secretary of State John Kerry followed Thursday, announcing he would give 5% of his salary to charity.
