Jerry G. Griffis
Shortly after noon on Easter Sunday, police arrested Jerry Giffis, 45, and charged him with shoplifting from North Platte’ s Wal-Mart.
Police reponsed to a complaint around 12:45 p.m. Griffis was witnessed taking merchandise past the point of sale without paying, according to a police report.
Due to two prior shoplifting convictions, Griffis was charged this time with felony shoplifting.
His bond is set at $10,000.
Griffis has spent a few days in jail off and on for nine years, according to Lincoln County Sheriff’s records.
Last June, he spent six days in the clinker after he was found with money and a camera that was apparently stolen from a woman’s purse in Cody Park.
In that case, a woman told police that she parked her vehicle by the camping area and went for a walk. Her purse was missing from the unsecured vehicle when she returned, a police spokesman said.
The woman told police she saw a man wearing a red shirt and blue jeans acting suspiciously near the vehicle but did not think much of it at the time.
Her purse contained keys, approximately $20 cash, a silver Olympus camera, make up, her ID, bank cards and other personal items, the spokesman said.
Later that evening, the woman called the police department and said the man she saw near her car was walking over the Jeffers St. viaduct.
Officers found the suspect and identified him as Griffis. He admitted to being at Cody Park near the camping area and river.
A search of his person revealed cash and a silver Olympus camera, as well as a small amount of marijuana, police said. The purse turned up in the men’s bathroom by the camping area of the park.
Griffis was charged with possession of stolen property. He spent four days in the Lincoln County Jail.
He was arrested again in November and charged with being a fugitive in Lancaster County. That time, he spent six days in the Lincoln County Jail.
Griffis was charged with shoplifting in October 2010.
