Braka A. Matlock

Amiria Braka Matlock was booked into jail Thursday to serve 24 hours on the anniversary of the death of Greg Styles, as part of a unique sentence handed down nearly five years ago.

Styles died after a confrontation between the two men at a bar in March 2008.

Investigators believe that Matlock was provoked. Matlock hit Styles, who fell backward and hit his head on a pool table.

Styles died three days later after he was removed from life support at a Kearney hospital.

Matlock was first charged with manslaughter, but the charge was lowered to attempted manslaughter. Matlock did not contest the lesser charge.

Lincoln County District Judge John Murphy handed down a unique sentence. He ordered Matlock to report to jail twice each year on Styles’ birthday and on the anniversary of his death, and spend 24 hours inside.

Matlock was also ordered to pay $500 a month in restitution, half of which goes to a trust fund for Styles’ son, who can access the money when he goes to college or when he turns 21, whichever comes first.

Matlock was also ordered to pay medical expenses stemming from the incident, as well as the funeral costs. And, he was also sentenced to 120 days in jail.
