Michael F. Stone
Michael F. Stone, 24, formerly of North Platte, was sentenced to 2–6 years Monday in the state penitentiary for theft by receiving. He took a car from Missouri and brought it to North Platte. He was caught in September after a traffic stop.
Deputy Lincoln County Attorney Jennifer Wellan asked for penitentiary time. She said Stone has no respect for the law and has a two-year prison sentence on his record.
Wellan also said Stone crossed state lines committing this crime and has committed more crimes since.
Riding with Stone was Shane Melton, who was also arrested. Melton was wanted for leaving the scene of an injury accident in Lincoln County, as well as a warrant in Logan County.
Officers found the car was reported stolen from Independence, Mo., where a woman said her purse and car keys had been stolen.
Stone was already wanted in Lincoln County for seven offenses including theft, bad checks and failure to appear.
He was also charged with possession of a controlled substance after the car was stopped.
But defense attorney Michael Nozicka said Stone had the car owner’s permission to use the car, just not for as long as he did.
District Judge Donald Rowlands was not persuaded. Before he handed down the 2-6 year sentence, he noted that Stone is only 24 and already has a long record, and now, two felony convictions.
Rowlands gave Stone credit for 299 days already served in the county jail.
