Ready for drought: Power company adds more generatorsTell North Platte what you think

Faced with the likelihood of another summer of severe drought, mobile generators will be installed in north-central Nebraska to boost the supply of electricity there.

The board of directors of the Nebraska Public Power District authorized the rental of the generators Friday. They are expected to cost between $4.7 and $7.9 million, including fuel.

The generators are mounted inside a semi-trailer. They will be installed in five places in the north central area, NPPD spokesman Mark Becker said Tuesday.

Last summer strained NPPDs electric load to the max. NPPD set several records for electric load from early July-August, as temperatures soared and little rain fell.

During the heat wave and drought, NPPD set a record for generation with 3,030 megawatts on July 25, Becker said.

NPPD exceeded its old record more than 30 times last summer. That record was 2,671 megawatts on July 30, 2006.

Each mobile generator can add as much as 8 megawatts of energy to the system, Becker said.
