Danny Woodhead will take his talents to the West Coast next season, after he signed on with the San Diego Chargers on Friday.

The North Platte native has a two-year deal with the Chargers, after spending three seasons with the New England Patriots.

The Chargers are coming off of a 7-9 season in 2012 in which they finished second in the AFC West division. San Diego is currently rebuilding under both a new general manager and head coach, and Woodhead is hoped to be one of the pieces in building a contending team.

Tom Telesco takes over as the GM for A.J. Smith and former Denver Broncos offensive coordinator Mike McCoy replaces Norv Turner as the coach. Turner was the coach in San Diego for five seasons and won divisional titles in each of his first three.

Woodhead joins running backs Ryan Mathews, Jackie Battle and Ronnie Brown in the Chargers back field. Mathews was the team's leading rusher with 707 yards.

Quarterback Philip Rivers returns for his eighth season under center. In 2012, Rivers threw for 3,606 yards and 26 touchdowns.

Woodhead, a North Platte native, finished the 2012-13 season with 747 total yards and three touchdowns for the Patriots, the NFL runner-up.

Playing in a limited capacity, he had 301 rushing (averaging 4 yards per carry) and 446 yards receiving (11.2 yards per reception.)
