A new west entrance is open at the Great Plains Regional Medical Center, as the $100 million expansion proceeds on schedule.

Work on the new entrance began in July and the entrance opened March 6.

The entrance contains a large reception and waiting area on the ground floor, connecting to the same-day services/outpatient treatment center, as well as the heart and vascular center, plus a hallway that leads to the Callahan cancer treatment center.

The hospital's new internet technology center is on the second floor of the new entrance.

The entrance to the emergency rooms on the west side remains the same, as does the main entrance to the Callahan Cancer Center, but the center's main entrance on the south side is now permanently closed and demolition is getting underway.

The new south entrance has moved east to where it was when Great Plains Regional first opened in the 1970s. The gift shop, chapel and volunteer desks are located inside the new entrance.

Constuction of the new five-story tower is beginning and is expected to continue until spring/summer 2015.

The west hospital entrance will be open Monday-Friday 5:30 a.m.-7 p.m.

Typically, volunteers will be available in the temporary main south entrance as well as the west entrance to greet and escort patients and visitors, marketing specialist Megan Hanson said.

All hospital services will continue to be offered throughout the construction.
