A young North Platte man allegedly tried to kill another man early Sunday morning by driving his pickup through the front of the Perkins restaurant.

Tanner Matthies, 20, is in jail for attempted murder after he drove a Dodge pickup into Perkins restaurant shortly before 5 a.m. Sunday.

Matthies had an argument with the man on the phone before he went ballistic, Police Spokesman Rodney Brown said. Matthies drove through the front and into the restaurant, striking the man.

The 25 year-old victim is from Greeley, Colo. His injuries are extensive and some might be permanent. He was taken to Great Plains Regional Medical Center. The relationship between the men was not immediately known, Brown said.

Perkins is near North Platte's main I-80 exit.

Brown said Matthies is not suspected of being under the influence of drugs or alcohol.

Matthies is charged with three felonies -- second-degree attempted murder, first-degree assault and criminal mischief.

He is held on a $1 million bond.

Perkins reopened Sunday, as soon as the damage was cleaned up and patched.
