Two North Platte men broke into a salvage yard Saturday night and allegedly spent hours inside, driving around and stealing stuff.

Shawn Reese, 22, and Stephen Marquez, 24, allegedly drove off with a pickup load of goods from ABC Auto salvage first thing Saturday morning, but instead of getting cash for the goods, they got a trip to jail.

The two men are believed to have worked from 3:30-6:30 a.m. inside the yard, using ABC trucks to shuttle batteries, tires and metals to their pickup parked outside, according to a sheriff’s spokesman.

A passerby spotted the suspicious pickup around 6:30 a.m. parked in a ditch on Dodge St., as the two men were coming out of the yard, a sheriff’s investigator said. The passerby followed them to an apartment at 1914 ½ West Sixth St., then contacted ABC owner Dale Hill, who called the cops.

Sheriff’s deputies didn’t find the pickup at the apartment, but continued to investigate and later determined that the men evidently returned and were inside the apartment.

Marquez and Reese gave up and were taken into custody shortly before noon. There was no standoff, but extensive discussions, the spokesman said. The pickup was found, full of stolen items.

The men allegedly broke into a building in the back of the yard too, the spokesman said.

Both men are charged with burglary, theft, unauthorized use of a vehicle, possession of stolen property, trespassing and criminal mischief.

Marquez recently got out of jail. He has a record of arrests dating to 2008. Most recently, he was arrested in November and spent 111 days in jail for felony possession of a firearm. Before that, he was arrested in 2009 on drug charges and spent 111 days in jail at that time.

Likewise, Reese has been arrested six times since 2008. He did six months in jail in 2009 on burglary charges. Along with Eric Bartels and Jeremy Wood, he was implicated in dozens of buglarlies.
