Storm causes two car wrecks on overpassesTell North Platte what you think

Freezing rain and harsh north winds arrived in North Platte Saturday afternoon and continued until early Sunday morning.

Up to 3 inches of snow fell, containing just 0.05 inch of moisture, the National Weather Service in North Platte said. But that was more than enough for two North Platte motorists.

Icy roads are blamed for two wrecks on North Platte overpasses Saturday night.

A Jeep Cherokee went of out control around 8:45 p.m. on the north side of the Jeffers St. overpass and slid into the rail.

Police said the rear tires lost traction and the vehicle headed toward the median. In correcting, Clarissa Bucholz, 17, turned toward the right and the front of the vehicle hit the concrete barrier. The vehicle spun around backwards on the ice and snow.

There was only minimal damage to the Cherokee's front bumper, but the impact caused both front air bags to deploy. The overpass was not damaged.

A Ford Mustang did the same thing about an hour later on the Poplar St. overpass.

Richard Curry, 32, said he lost control on the slick pavement as he was going down the south side of the overpass.

His Mustang sustained $2,500 in estimated damages.
