State's child welfare scandals continue to unfoldTell North Platte what you think

LINCOLN – A former head of the Illinois child welfare agency — who resigned after an audit found his friend was awarded millions in taxpayer dollars with little to show for it — is now helping Nebraska negotiate how much it will pay a private company to provide child welfare services.

Erwin McEwen left his job as director of the Illinois Department of Children and Family Services in September 2011 after that state’s executive inspector general found that a man McEwen described as his “personal friend and mentor” – Dr. George Smith — perpetrated a “large scale fraud” upon the state.

Four years ago, Gov. Dave Heineman turned the state's child welfare system over to private companies who demanded more money, broke their contracts and eventually pulled out in all areas but Lincoln and Omaha, and still charged the state millions of dollars.

Costs soared, payments to foster families and subcontractors were delayed and record keeping was lax, but the program continued because of assurances of a key official, Todd Reckling, who resigned after state auditors uncovered the financial problems.

A year ago, the Legislature enacted reforms, appointing an inspector general to oversee the program.

I too have had firsthand experience with the state's "child welfare" system and believe me the last thing this governor is concerned is the welfare of the children of this state! He has totally gutted the DHHS and demoralized the few people who actually managed to stay with them. He handed their care over to a private contractor who in turn hired anyone off the street who applied to "handle" their complex and difficult problems. Thank God we were able to take custody of our Grandchild from these boobs and keep him with us or I have no idea what would have happened to him, it was like a nightmare without end! These "workers" had no education and no experience working with these helpless children and their families, our Grandson was with us for over 3 months before anyone even checked on him or us. I mean we could have been terrible people and they wouldn't have even known!! This governor only cares about farmers and big money, anything after that is just dead weight to him. There was an autistic child thrown into prison and was beaten almost to death and when I wrote him about it his response was something like "too bad, we don't let anyone out for any reason" and this child was in prison for basically nothing! I am all for free enterprise but I believe we are judged by how we take care of out most helpless citizens not just the one's with the most money and infulence. Governor Dave has lost my respect and hopefully people will expose his "legacy" for what it is, a complete and total joke gone bad.

I do have firsthand expeience with thestate's child welfare system breaking their contracts and the eventual ending of the contracts. I have a child that first went to the Boys and Girls Home, when it closed down he was sent to the Wilcox House, when it closed its doors, he was sent to live at the Fern Wilcox House when they combined the children together, when they were closing down he was sent to Madison, NE to a juvenile detention center, and eventually he was sent to YRTC in Kearney. So he was in an unstable environement perpetrated by the State of Nebraska and their closing down of shelters, closing of places because of contracts, etc. No child should have to be sent to so many places because the state can;t get their poop in a group. I am sure this happened to many children. And now what are they facing, a shady character making decisions with their lives once again. The Stage of Nebraska couldn't help them and now they have this mess. Way to go!

Seems our children from troubled families have always suffered. But to have this done on a State level is just not acceptable. Greedy bastards!!
