One year after a terrifying tornado ripped through houses west of North Platte and did more than $2 million in damages, tornado hunters will be in town for two days to talk about storm chasing.

Through grants from the National Science Foundation and the North Platte Public Schools Foundation, North Platte is part of the Tornado Alley Education and Outreach tour.

Tornado Alley is a 3D IMAX film created by Sean Casey, star of the Discovery Channel’s Storm Chasers series.

Two scientists from the series’ VORTEX2 research team -- Dr. Karen Kosiba and DOW technician Ab Pfieffer from the Center for Severe Weather Research in Boulder -- will speak and the film Tornado Alley will be shown in 3D, followed by questions and answers.

Students will also get the chance to tour the Doppler on Wheels (DOW) storm chasing vehicle. The shows will be hosted by Scott Fauteux.


Dates and locations:

Friday, March 15

9–10:30 a.m. and 1-2:30 p.m. for Osgood and Lake Maloney students at Osgood, 495 West State Farm Road, Dr. Midge Mougey, principal; Monna Trueblood, Secretary.


Saturday, March 16

11 a.m.–12:30 p.m. and 2-3:30 p.m.

North Platte High School Performing Arts Center, 1220 W. 2nd Street. $5, limited seats. Only 250 tickets available for each show.

Also on Saturday, the DOW will be on display at Bill Summers Ford Honda Nissan at 3301 S. Jeffers.


The Red Cross and the National Weather Service will have tables in front of the Performing Arts Center and hand out information on severe weather and emergency preparedness.

Teresa Keck, Warning Coordination Meteorologist, National Weather Service in North Platte will also speak briefly during the presentations.
