LINCOLN-Hartington Cedar Catholic won the second quarter from North Platte St. Pat's on Thursday and that turned out to be the difference in the Trojans' 56-49 win in the first round of the state tournament at Lincoln High School.

Hartington Cedar Catholic will play Sutton in the Class C2 semifinals on Friday while St. Pat's finishes the season with a 22-4 record.

Cedar Catholic (21-7) broke out to an 8-2 start. But the Irish came right back, scoring the next eight points to take a 10-8 lead late in the first quarter. Hartington's Grant Howell scored a basket to tie the game at 10 all at the end of the first quarter.

Both teams battled for much of the second quarter. But with a little over two minutes left in the first half, Howell put back a missed three-pointer by Logan Feilmeier to put Cedar Catholic up 21-16.

Then on the ensuing possession, James Kaiser got a layup to give the Trojans a seven-point lead.

Alex Harms got a basket for St. Pat's to end the run and Joseph Clinch made one of two from the free throw line to bring the Irish to within four. But Kaiser hit a three to end the first half and Cedar Catholic had a 26-19 lead.

The Trojans never relinquished the lead. Both teams played each other to a stalemate in the third quarter and it was 40-33 going into the fourth.

With just under six minutes to play, Kaiser knocked down another three to put Cedar Catholic up 47-37. The lead then quickly became 12 when Kaiser got a layup off of a steal.

St. Pat's tried to rally in the last two minutes. But the Trojans made enough of their free throws to hang on and win the rematch of last year's Class C2 consolation game, was was also won by Hartington.

Joseph Clinch scored 15 points for the Irish and Alex Harms has 12 in the effort.
