Drew Callaghan battles for position inside with Omaha South's Buay Tuach

LINCOLN-Omaha South's size and athleticism proved to be too much for North Platte on Thursday with the No. 2-ranked Packers winning 52-36 in the first round of the state tournament at the Devaney Center.

NPHS finishes its season with a record of 16-8.

Going into the game, the Bulldogs wanted to keep the tempo at a deliberate pace and they achieved that for the first three quarters.

Omaha South (24-3) broke out to an 11-6 lead with 1:20 left in the first quarter when 6-foot-8 center Lyle Hexom scored inside. But Jack Kenny and Drew Callaghan scored the last two baskets of the first for North Platte and the Bulldogs only trailed by one point, 11-10.

South extended its lead in the second with an 8-2 run to start the quarter. Bobby Lage made a pair of three-pointers to start the rally in the first minute. Then Cam Williams got a layup off of a steal to give the Packers a 19-12 lead with 6:35 left until halftime.

The good news for the Dawgs is that they held South to just three points the rest of the half. But the bad news was that NPHS only managed two points in that span.

North Platte battled in the third quarter and trailed by 7 points, 32-25, going into the fourth.

But South started to pull away early in the fourth quarter after Hexom got dunks on consecutive possessions.

The Bulldogs, unable to make any shots outside the whole game, couldn't put together a run to answer and the Packers moved into the Class A semifinals against Papillion-LaVista.
