A year-long search for the vice-president of McCook Community College is not finished, Mid-Plains Community College President Ryan Purdy said Friday.

In an email to college faculty and staff, Purdy said the search will be reopened.

Michele Gill has been the interim vice-president at McCook since January 2012.

Gill was promoted from her job as the Dean of Student Life and replaced long-term McCook vice-president Richard Tubbs, who abruptly retired after the college president took a job in Norfolk.

A search committee was formed to look for a permanent replacement for Tubbs, and the committee interviewed applicants. Purdy said.

“We brought candidates to campus a couple of weeks ago,” Purdy said in his email.

Purdy said there is an “expectation to have the position filled by the end of this spring semester” in May.

“I am committed to finding the right candidate for this very important position and will not settle for the sake filling the position,” he said.

Talk Back

This is unquestionably a wise decision by this institution of higher learning. When an organization hires or appoints an unqualified person to a very important position, it will predictably lead to problems. For example, long-term employees will abruptly leave the organization. The organization will then struggle to find an uber-qualified candidate who will make up for the lack of talent. As the search process progresses, internal candidates will feel slighted when they are not seriously considered for the position and morale will wane. The qualified external candidates will see the myriad of issues with the organization and they will turn down offers for the position. This situation will often drag on for a year or more. It is an unpleasant scenario that any organization should endeavor to avoid. I am elated that this college is committed to finding the right candidate and will not settle for the sake of filling the position.

When they hired Purdy they only advertised the position in the Telegraph, That may be their problem, they are advertising nationally for the position rather than just locally.
