Kirk Nichols winced a bit as he climbed the stairs at North Platte’s largest construction project -- the new Nebraskaland National Bank building.

Nichols, the construction manager, walks on two artificial knees through a building that is comparable in size to a football field, or an indoor arena.

But Nichols doesn’t mind.

He’s having fun.

Nichols, who has overseen several major construction projects in North Platte, including the Lincoln County’s jail and sheriff’s offices, said this crew is busy every day on this job, no matter the weather.

They are making good progress.

The steel high on the top floor was set during the coldest days of the winter, testifying to the toughness of the crew, Nichols said.

Nearly 40 workers were working Feb. 12 and despite a freezing wind chill, no heaters were running.

“We should be ahead of schedule by the end of February,” Nichols said. “We are getting ahead of some of the suppliers already.”

The bank is scheduled to open in October.

At 230-feet long, the new building approaches the length of a football field (300 ft.) It is 75 feet wide, depending on where you stand — half as wide as a football field. It also has three stories plus a full basement, while a football field is on one level.

The building starts 15 feet below ground and rises nearly 50 feet above it.

It is the size of an indoor arena.

And the building looks a little like a ship, with rounded edges and decks on the south side, as though it would sail southward toward the South Platte River if it could.

Although it is made of concrete and steel, it will have lots of glass, offering dramatic views of traffic rolling around town.

The rounded decks on the south end will cast shade on the south windows during the summer.

Nichols considers it a relatively simple, durable, spacious building. There will be room inside for growth if the bank becomes even busier.

Interiors walls are already up in the basement and the walls are going up on the first floor. The basement will contain computer storage and servers, utility systems, general storage, a break room and employee lockers.

The basement is protected from a high water table by a waterproof envelope. Drains buried around the outside of the building carry runoff water, as well as underground water if necessary, into the city's storm sewer pipes.

Inside on the first floor, personal bankers and tellers will work at spacious counters and offices. There is room for a coffee shop or restaurant on the south end of the first floor.

The second floor is for loan offices, executive offices and conference rooms.

The board of directors will meet in an executive conference room on the top floor, where there will also be a covered patio that looks out a Dewey St. and traffic coming straight into town. Office space will be available for rent on the third floor, Nichols said.

There will be three elevators plus two full sets of stairways in the building.

Heat and cooling will come form a geo-thermal system — 101 pipes run 300 feet deep outside around the building and come back, carrying fluid that it is naturally heated and cooled by the earth’s constant 55 degree temperature.

K2 Construction of Lincoln has about 20 more pipes to bury to complete that part of the project. K2 was digging a well Tuesday, working in the cold and wet – another example of tenacity.

Nichols, who was construction manager for Wells Fargo, Tier One and the first Nebraskaland National Bank, as well as the Platte River Mall, said architect Jacob Sertech of Wilkins, Hinrichs and Stober of Kearney has done an excellent job of designing the building and responds promptly to questions and change orders.

There are 30 companies working on the building. The average age of the crew is 35 years old, he said.

“They are really good workers,” Nichols said. “They have never missed a day. Everyone is getting along.”

“I am really pleased with how well they work,” Nichols said.

Those from North Platte include Snell’s Plumbing, Denny Hansen Construction, Platte Valley Electric, AJ’s Sheet Metal, Western Engineering, Moreland Enterprises, Steele’s, Weathercraft Roofing and Nebraska Safety and Fire.

Most other companies are from central Nebraska, including Midwest Partitions of Thedford and Central Nebraska Steel of Kearney.

“We’ve tried to hire local companies, using those who can get the job done during our time frame and can handle a project of this scale,” Nichols said.

“It’s not all that bad (cold),” Dave Mashek of Platte Valley Electric said as he worked in coat and gloves in the basement. “Two weeks ago, when it was around 10 degrees — that was cold.”

To nice person You need to change your name to something more fitting your nasty comments. A "structure like that"? What exactly do you mean by that? A modern looking building that ISN'T FINISHED yet but you can pass judgement on it? Not what a "nice person" would do! Why should the bank give you anything let alone 1/2% break in interest? What have you done for them? Maybe that 1/2% is what helps pay for all NLB does for the high school teams or some of the other MANY charities they support, do you need that more than them, are you more deserving? Not what a "nice person" would say then either. Shame on you building commission. Shame on you, NLB. Disgusting? WHAT?? What is disgusting about this new and wonderful building? You like the old run down time saver better? I think I can tell what is REALLY happening here, you think someone is doing better than you are so you feel the NEED to run them down and run down what they are doing, what have you done? What kind of building have you built? If it's so much better and better looking PLEASE inform me so I can pay you the homage that you so richly deserve! Jealously, that is not what a "nice person" displays on a public forum. IMHO you really need to change your name to something more fitting you words. Maybe ugly person with a chip on their shoulders?

When I suggested a "park", I was thinking more of a "green space" with a sidewalk, benches, and picnic tables instead of a soccer field. I know the property is too valuable for that, but the miss matched buildings up and down the ones just don't look very nice.

Behemoth bank with "commanding view" is about right for words. Not EVERYONE coming into North PLatte is or will be LOOKING for a BANK TO RUN TO!! and how can they NOT see the oversized building?? It sticks out like an oversized thumb on a midgets hand.

Reading all of the amateur architects reminds me of the Fountainhead movie where everyone tried to tell Gary Cooper how to construct buildings. His response: "I don't care what those people think of architecture." Good advice for any architect.

What is the deal with all the negativity? Do any of you realize how much money this project is streaming into our city, all the local people hired to do the work, etc? Does anyone remember that this is the same bank that personally bought Buffalo elementary school air conditioners because they were the only school in this city without any. People please, lighten up and try to find the positive in every situation.

Interest rates offered by this bank ARE pitiful, but last time I checked they ARE the best in town. We should blame the feds for that. Some other banks are pocketing the money for their out of town owners. I'd rather see some of the profits spent here in NP rather than go to Omaha like First National. Their rates have been low enough to embarass the empoyees. If everything is above board with this, we are luck to have such a smart person with vision making improvements.

for the ones that want to always complain. Why? Why is it in everyones interest to constantly find something bad to say about what others do. sometimes, mind your business. SO WHAT. For all these higher dollar buildings and renovations, GOOD. I'm not from here and I think there's so much eye sore in this town. If some people put money where there mouths are, maybe some of the homes in this town would look decent too. Good for NLNB. If you pay attention, it's NOT another bank, some of these banks over grow with staff and customer needs and the lots that they are currently at are no longer efficient for everyone. Its simple relocating with larger space. Come on people, lets start being a little more positive and stop worring about what everyone else does.

Thetruth: agreed! I do believe the facade they chose looks kinda ugly from the renderings I've seen. But, it is good for the community in terms of property tax dollars and construction dollars. And, if a bank is going to build a giant building there, I am glad that it's a local bank where the profits stay in the community.

There have been some very good points made in the comments below. Futuredr is correct about land use and taxs. The land has some of the most car-count visibility in town, and therefore warrants the additional value. Mush too valuable for a park, along with too dangerous of an area for a park. As I would estimate, the new valuation on the completed project should put the property tax on that block alone at roughly $375,000.00 per year. Now its up to the county assessor to value it correctly. The bank however does seem out of place as it is so big, it literally dwarfs everything around it. Even time saver had to move it huge interstate sign to hve any type of line of sight exposure. We will see as time goes by what people think of it. My personal opinion is that the city green-lighted this project only because the city is so desperate for any type of construction and they failed to due their due dilegence on the long term planning for the city. I will say however, that it is definately returning much needed construction spending to the community. Someone stated that the reason the site is ugly is because it is a construction site. That really is not true. The site has been managed in a very orderly manner and the site is not ugly. But I do feel that when completed, no matter what the facade looks like and what materials are used in its finish, the bank will look out of place. Hopefully I am wrong. In most cities of our size, you would only see a building this oversized for its lot in an area with comparable buildings of its size.

Also, why would you take the most expensive piece of property in town (which equals tens of thousands of dollars of year in property taxes) and take it off the tax rolls by turning it into a park? That makes no sense!

Tiger: make it into a city park? Were you willing to donate the millions of dollars it took to buy this land so that it could be a park? And as Mike pointed out, I don't think I would let my kids play in a park that is a city block surrounded by 4 of the busiest streets in town.

Isn't that the American way? To buy land for cheap then sell it at a profit?

I like how everyone said that all the rundown old buildings there were ugly and now they say the new construction is ugly. And as for the idea of putting in a park, that would be a bad idea. You've got the two busiest roads in town on both sides of that lot, imagine if a ball flew out into traffic or if a kid ran into traffic. I'll take the bank.

the guy building the new bank is also the guy who bought the area where Menards now sits for roughly 550k, TIFed it for himself and his partners, and sold it to Menards for roughly 3.4 million dollars in the matter of a few months time. Please note, this information is all available at your local Lincoln County Courthouse at the Register of Deeds Office. Nothing against someone making a buck, but this is one of many examples of what is going on. Another current one is over on East Walker Road, the WHOLE development that is, roughly 1.5 miles of it.

I like online banking and a smaller home town feel. Don't need as much brick and mortar for my bank. I would take all the land between the ones and make it into a city park.

futuredr, to my knowledge, it was roughly 7.5 million paid for those lots, and an additional 600k for the lot on the sw corner of Leota and Jeffers. I can think of absolutely no other business in NP that could/can afford that price. do you think that maybe that group of friends/businessmen who own this town might have made that much money by artificially inflating all the land they bought up around town? Or TIFing their own land for their own and their friends developments? There are alot of fishy deals done by this group and its just too bad no one has the stones to stand up to them.

For those of you complaining about this bank being there: If you don't like it, then why didn't you start and build a business that would make millions of dollars so that you could have paid almost 5 million for those lots and then build whatever you wanted there?

I agree. For the location, it is way too large. It blocks all of the businesses in the area. It's 'in your face'and city fathers should NEVER have let a structure like that be built there. The bank can afford that monstrosity, yet they can't afford to give but a paltry half a percent in interest. Shame on you building commission. Shame on you, NLB. Disgusting.

ALL the employees at the surrounding business' that I have had the opportunity to visit have stated the exact same thing I think about this building. Its an eyesore, its ugly, and it is out of place. Nothing like some shameful plugs for a big advertiser in your paper. Now lets see what your assessor assess's this monster at and see if its realistic or if its assessed at 1/3rd of its true cost.
