The North Platte Community College men's basketball team continued their winning ways Saturday, defeating the Eastern Wyoming College Lancers, 73-60.
With the win, the Knights win the Region IX South Subregion by two games, earning them the south subregion No. 1 seed for the Region IX tournament.
North Platte is 25-5 on the season and 13-3 in Region IX.
Eastern Wyoming falls to 16-13 and 8-8 in the region.
“It is a big accomplishment for the guys in our program to have gone through an extremely tough 16 game subregion schedule to win it outright against two tough opponents on the road," Knights Head Coach Kevin O'Connor said. "The team has played with heart and chemistry throughout the year."
The Knights started strong as they raced out to a 14-3 lead. The Lancers chipped away throughout the first half to go into the locker room trailing by only three points, 34-31.
The start of the second half was a back and forth battle, as both teams fought hard to gain an advantage. With under 10 minutes to play the Knights made a big run to take a 17-point lead that they would never relinquish.
Ethan Montalvo sparked the run, finishing several difficult lay-ups at the rim on his way to be the leading scorer in the game with 17 points. The Knights also got double figure scoring efforts from Tim Simmons with 14 points and Aboubacar Casse with 13 points and 7 rebounds.
Prescott Williamns led the Lancers with 12 points.
The Region IX Tournament will be held at Casper College, the winner of the north subregion over Sheridan College Saturday. Both teams finish with a 13-3 subregion record but Casper won the tie-breaker.
The Knights will face the No. 8 seed from the north subregion on March 2 at 3 p.m.
