Sheriff's office to get new pickupsTell North Platte what you think

Only one bidder offered to sell the county sheriff's office three new pickups Tuesday, but the package price came in under budget, Sheriff Jerome Kramer said.

The three new pickups will arrive this summer for a net cost of $64,540.

Chairman Joe Hewgley opened the only timely bid for the pickups, from Janssen Chrysler/Jeep/Dodge of North Platte. Another bid from a dealer in Fremont arrived five minutes after the deadline, deputy county clerk Terry Heessel said.

The sheriff is trading three old cars in the deal – two Ford Crown Victorias and a 2006 Dodge Charger -- for a total of $5,000.

Hewgley thought the trade-in values would be higher and suggested selling the cars at auction, but Kramer doubted they would fetch more that way. Deputies said the Crown Vics each have 150,000 miles or more, and Kramer noted that Janssen is allotting $3,000 for the Charger.

In response to Hewgley’s question, Kramer said the package price is less money than he budgeted, and Hewgley relented. The board approved the deal, 3-0.

Kramer said the new pickups would arrive in 3-4 months.

Also, the commissioners agreed to sell some old pipe, screens and worn out pumps from a county operated gravel pit near Brady. Roads Supervisor Jerry Hitchcock said the roads department has an agreement with the property owner to clean up the area.

The iron is 25-30 yeas old, Hitchcock said.

In other business, the commissioners:

• Learned that the constitution of the cooperative UNL extension for Lincoln, McPherson and Logan counties still contains the word “cooperative.” The commissioners refused to sign the constitution without the word being included.

• Discussed selling two lots of land in the southeast part of Brady. The land is inaccessible by road. Neighboring property owners Tammie and Sam Taullie asked the county if they could buy the lots. The county must hold a public hearing and advertise the lots for sale, according to state law, Deputy County Attorney Joe Wright said.

• Officially terminated the jail booking system by Archonix Systems. The system has been replaced with a less costly system.

• Approved a special liquor permit for the Cattlemen’s Ball that will be held near Sutherland on June 7-9.

• Agreed to hire Weathercraft Roofing to repair the roof of the Department of Motor Vehicles building for $10,438.

With new trucks does it mean they will actually be driving them and enforcing the law or just sitting pretty?

Wow! With the mentality that is shown by most comments, it is no wonder it was so easy to make $4,000. average and another $2,500. in the F&I office over the years in the auto business.

For those concerned about the fuel economy of cruisers versus pickups, consider that those Crown Vics barely get double digit mileage to the gallon. I can't speak, or type, on the Charger but I bet fuel economy-wise it is at least a parallel move. I have also read (in the bulletin, as a matter of fact, a few years ago) that the main difference between police cruisers and civilian cars these days is the power system. Cops use a lot of juice running their computer systems, it is far more than an off-the-lot car could handle.

I can assure you I am not a car salesman and am not associated with Janssen's at all. I work in a school, far from a car lot. Literally, the nearest car dealer is about 60 miles away.

stuperdave: They did not give people one day to submit bids. They usually accept them for about 4 weeks, so being 5 minutes late is on the dealer, not the county.

I do think it should be noted that a 2013 Chevrolet Silverado 4x4 can be purchased by departments through the state bid for $20,999.

All of you are still ignoring the fact that in the past they have sold their vehicles at action, and they rarely brought more than $100. Nebred: If you say these three vehicles would bring over $10,000 at action, then how come that was never the case in the past? Justmeagain: You can't blame Mike for having a voice of reason. Just because he is a taxpayer doesn't mean he has to be illogical, complain about everything, and make stuff up just to be able to complain more, like most of the people on here. I am a taxpayer, a conservative, and dislike taxes just as much as everybody else. But, when there is an emergency I also want the cops to have reliable enough vehicles to get there.

And also to reject a bid for 5 minutes late is bleeping retarded. did it ever occur perhaps their clocks r slightly off? maybe bad/slow connection caused delay. Poop happens.

If sheriff vehicles are as maintained as NSP ones (I service them)I'd gladly buy one. Perhaps they should offer public chance to place bid on used ones and compare to what dealer would offer in trade. Higher price wins. I've also seen a lot of used vehicles coming from both small and big time car lots. There are a lot of u over paying for what u get. One bigger lot filled manual transmission in ford with ATF. It actually takes 80/90, get ur vehicle checked especially the underside. Dealers not there to sell u what u need. They there to steal ur money.

Mike, sounds like you were part of the sale? the points are those of a sales man , not a tax payer.

You are right on Bearsaurus, sometimes the factory bid assistance money can be as high as $8,000. per vehicle depending on how aggressive the factory wants to be. Chrysler has been very aggressive in the past few years as anyone can tell by the large number of their products. Also, Ford no longer builds the Crown Vic and many departments are requesting V-8's which eliminates the Impala. A lot of sheriff departments are now using SUV's or PU's, which is better for resale, but, the extra fuel most likely negates any of that. There are sites that specialize in selling very low mileage police package vehicles at a large discount compared to factory new also, but, does require some extra effort and takes a new sale from a dealer.

Normally your local dealer contacts the Fleet side of the Manufacturer and obtains the new vehicle cost from them. These are not retail vehicles and have very little relationship to the pricing of a retail vehicle. Fleet departments of the manufacturer set prices to dealers based upon fleet vehicles purchased in a given period of time. That is why the State can purchase fleet vehicles at a greater discount than can a government entity that is buying 1 or 2 or 5. I suspect that the Janssens did not make a great profit on these vehicles. Fleet sales are not highly profitable as a general rule. It is nice to see a local business get a sale. It is not always better somewhere else North Platte.

with knowing someone who works on these vehicals all the time I would say the are better maintained and taking care of than most everyday citizens and they are cleaned inside and out very thourghly every week yea they got the trucks for a good price (maybe) we don't know what the unopened bid may have been) but I Guarantee they get at least 10,000. grand for these cars jmo

When you build one online, it only shows the retail price. There are numerous incentives that are not deducted such as factory rebates, dealer holdback, normal markup, and VPA money. The used vehicles were given as trade at a below wholesale price. The easier and better way would be to list them on e-Bay and let the market determine the value. Then look at 20K and under mileage replacements that would provide a good service life. There are a lot of counties doing just that and it has shown substantial savings.

Since these pickups are coming from Janssens, go on over to the Dodge website and build a Dakota or a half ton Ram, you can't do it for as cheap as these trucks are being sold to Lincoln County.

Thats trade in for a car that hasn't been driven heavily and you are not as likely to find dirty needles missed during the pat down, and probably doesn't have as many bodily fluids spilled in it and stuff. A retired squad car isn't any better than a taxi cab.

Why are you debating me? You should be telling Kramer and the commissioners that you don't like what they are doing.

I think they got a fair deal on the trade ins. You can't really go with the KBB value, because this is an unusual situation. After they get done with the cars, they are usually in pretty bad shape. And, they have hole's drilled in them everywhere from all of the equipment. A few years ago I went to their auction and bought a crown vic. I paid $150, and I think it was the most expensive one. So, if people would actually show up to the auctions and pay a decent price I'm sure they would still do that.....but people don't. I think they got less than $500 for all 6 vehicles they sold at that auction.

if you look these trade in vehicals up on Kelly Blue Book and other places the Crown Vic's with 150,000 miles at lowest rating still would cost 3655.00 each and the Charger with say 100,000 miles at fair value would bring 8,000.00 so if you ask me they got crappy trade in maybe they should offer these to a high bidder hell I would og gave them 10 grand for all three, And why do they need 3 trucks yes there are a lot of rural roads in Lincoln county but 3 four wheel drive trucks with the price of gas going up everyday I had to park my truck again wasteful spending

Then you also have to think that these are going to probably be quad cab pickups and probably have four wheel drive. Three quad cab 4x4s for basically 21 grand each is a good price.

With a used vehicle they would just be replacing it sooner than with a new one. They are getting rid of a Crown Vic with 150k on it only to replace it with a used car with 100k or more, might as well make a smarter investment and get a new one with only 10 or 15 miles on it.

They are not tuned any different I can tell you from submitting bids over the years. Even if they were tuned different, that would not increase the cost. The "police package" is more suspension. alternator and interior. If they would look at used, they could have easily saved ten thousand, which is not a great amount, but if every department looks at opportunities to save, it would add up quite nicely.

$64k for three brand new trucks with engines tuned for higher performance seems like a pretty good deal to me. Probably no leather and wood trim, but still about as good as any civilian could do.

Chrysler Crown Victoria's ....hmm must be a rare model not offered to the public. Why are cash strapped government entities continually spending money on NEW vehicles? The used vehicles should have been put out for public bid and low mileage used vehicles should have been considered. If we continue to allow our elected officials to operate in this way, we will remain one of the highest taxed areas in Nebraska.
