Chuck Hagel

Chuck Hagel of Nebraska was blocked from confirmation as U.S. Secretary of Defense Thursday, falling two votes short of what is needed for the Senate to cast an up or down vote.

Sen. Mike Johanns was one of four Republican Senators who joined Democrats. Sen. Deb Fischer voted no. The vote was 58-40. Sixty votes were needed.

Hagel was nominated by President Barack Obama. Controversy has grown, with critics saying he is too outspoken, too independent and his financial dealings are questionable.

Hagel, a decorated Vietnam veteran, has said that the Iraq War is one of the five biggest blunders in U.S. history.

Hagel was born in North Platte in 1946. He grew up in northern and western Nebraska, as his father worked at a handful of lumber companies over the years. Hagel served two terms in the Senate, choosing not to run for reelection in 2007. He has taught at Georgetown University since then, in addition to serving on the President's Intelligence Advisory Board as well as the boards of directors of the Chevron corporation and the Public Broadcasting System.

Democrats say they will bring back the nomination in a few days.

AJSDAD, I can't make up my mind as to which is funnier... the fact that you feel that the Dems are the only truth, or the fact that you repeat what they say, without further thought!!

To Cliffne.....Nancy Pelosi is not one to Punish .....that comes from the Right....they bring up bills then vote against them just to Spite the American taxpayer and the President.Even to the point of Filibustering their own bill! Now how does that make sense? The GOP Clown-car show is a joke and does not help our Country get to where we need to be.....just wasting more time...doing nothing....guess how many days has This Congress worked since January 1st? 20 days. 20 ! Thats for nothing Bonehead Boehner for reallllly "focusing like a Lazor" his words)on Jobs. BTW,while Ms.Pelosi was the Majority leader and will be again...she passed over 300 bills!! For Boehner....maybe 20...about the same amount of days they actually worked LOL !!! In 3 years.

You are right, AJSDAD, he sometimes reminds me of Nancy Pelosi! Remember that year that she had the chance to push the Dems agenda forward, with President Obama at the helm? She squandered it while trying to punish the previous president! What a terrible waste!! LOL

Hmmm...and McCain's choice of pretty Sarah "I can see Russia from my house" Palin was just what we needed, especially when she was just a heart attack from the red button? Guess I'll put my trust in Mr. Hagel. He was born in Nebraska and never said he could see Russia from his backyard...

It's always a treat to engage in discussion with people that lack basic comprehensive ability and make stuff up as they go. Never said Hagel was not qualified. Simply said that just because someone has fought in a war and received a medal, that does not automatically make them qualified for a position that is fundamentally different than being a soldier, especially a Sgt., which is what Hagel's rank was. He has certainly made public statements, relatively recently, that appear contrary to long held defense and foreign policy, across parties. He should be scrutinized on these statements. If he will not follow long held or current policy because of his personal beliefs, he is not qualified and should not be confirmed. If he will follow this policy, than confirmation should not be an issue. But an examination of what he has said is necessary. Whether he is the most qualified certainly is an area of discussion, but even if he is not the most qualified, that does not make him unqualified, assuming he will adhere to policy that is in the best interest of the country. But, I highly doubt that these statements will be even remotely comprehended by 1, no matter how basic they are...people wearing blinders are generally incapable of logical thought and discussion...

I have no doubt that Hagel will ultimately be confirmed. My question was more; is he the best choice for the position. He is just another recycled power monger doing whatever it takes to stay in the spotlight.

To close this Topic....I will ask Sako and Yoda and any one else who thinks Mr. Chuck Hagel is NOT qualified to become our new Sec. of Defense. Watch...on MSNBC...MONDAY next....Hubris,The Selling of the Iraq War. I dare you to watch it. On January 24th,2007,Hagel comes down on all Senators about how they feel of that War.You can probably see it on Youtube. But it will also be shown within that Documentary on that night on MSNBC. I dare you to watch it and then try to 'walk back' the lies the Bushies laid on our Country.Leadnign us into a War that should NOT have ben fought.Thats why a Hero like Chuck Hagel should be confirmed. His decline to 'knee-jerk' like the Hawks on the GOP side is why they hate him.He...put Country before Party.Thats why he is the man we need and will soon be confirmed to the behest of the GOP War-mongers. To those that still think he still should not be confirmed,I will say, don't let your paranoia replace your sense of reason. Hubris,The selling of the Iraq War.Monday 18th on MSNBC.Get educated and join the real World.Oh,and whom was the Sec. of Defense at that time? Don Rumsfeld. Was he Filibustered? NO Chance!! Over 4000 of our own soldiers lives were lost due to his leadership. All ,based on a LIE.And whom doe the GOP Senators Filibuster in a First ever Filibusters of a Cabinet candidate? A War Hero, and voice of reason,Chuck Hagel.

Hagel is not qualified in any way to hold this job. Did you see him begging to get Bob Kerry in? He is just another obummer toadie. I am so glad that they stopped him from going any further, now if they can just hold the line.

Um...yes...just because someone has fought in a war, and received a medal does not make them qualified to be the Secretary of State. The intracies and complexities of the two things are entirely different. Kill or be killed is way different than managing the armed forces and budgeting and politics. I know quite a few people who have fought in wars. Some are clearly qualified to do what soldiers do, kill other people, but that doesn't make them qualified to be the Secretary of Defense, some probably aren't even qualified to turn on a computer, but that isn't an issue for them. Oh, yeah...I wouldn't expect that company to hire a nurse for that job...a nurse would be way over qualified if the job was only to draw blood. While the current President may think his plans are great, I tend to disagree, so I don't really mind people reigning thoise ideas in. But a direct question to you: Do the names: Bork, Thomas, Kempthorne and Johnson mean anything to you? If they don't...you may want to check your history, and then we can re-visit your 'sour grapes' comment some. But alas, considering your view of Constitutional things, and failure to research yourself, even when it has been suggested, I doubt you will do that. Yes, I have read your comments on another story, and yes, you don't really understand that issue much either...

To Yoda....so..if you wanted to work for a company that is one that 'draws blood' from patients....you think you should be hired OR should that company hire a Nurse that actually knows how to draw blood and has done it many times before? Chuck Hagel has been in a War,even became decorated and ...oh yeah, survived to become a respected Senator. This is a classic case of 'sour grapes' and baffoonery on the part of those that just want to use up 'time' and not achive other needed issues jst to spite our first African American President. There are only so many days to argue and vote on things in both Houses of our Government. And the GOP knows this. And they will stop at Nothing,to help this President achive greater things he has Planned for our country as a whole. I applaud both you and Friendly One....you are both spot-on ! To the others,well...thats why we have the Earth fur us, and Planet Styrofoam...for them....have a nice trip back guys....Hagel was a GOPer, but 2 wrongs don't make a right...Just like Gen.Powell ...he left when he saw what was being told to the American people. The quality of a good Assistant coach is Not to go with the flow....but to give insight on what Not to do. I am very much a LIBERAL.I don't put party before country and I give credit where credit is due.Hagel like Kerry, is highly qualified for their positions. All they all, espcially Hagel, just isn't what happy he wasn't for them. His is how own man. And to have him chim in on Bengazi is a huge 'what if' scenario as best.To ask if to predict the future? Not something he had anything to do witor could answer in the way some GOPers wanted him to.A cheap trap at best and shameless.Go Chuck!

The names Robert Bork and Clarence Thomas (just for example) remind anyone of anything? Party should have no relationship to these positions. Qualifications of the nominee should be the primary (if not only) consideration. Fighting in a war, and getting a medal does not make someone qualified in itself. The issues are a whole lot different, and philosophically different and complex. Hagel has made some statements that should be challenged to determine whether he is qualified, and will follow long held defense and foreign policy. Benghazi, and using Hagel's nomination as a chit, is fundamentally wrong, IMO, but a practice that has been widely used by both parties. So really, nothing to see here that is new. Speaking of Benghazi, I guess it would be somewhat relevant to determine what a Sec. of Defense's position would have been in the same situation...would he have ignored prior intelligence? Would he have done nothing to assist once an attack happened? Would he have blamed the attack on a fictional cause? Probably better questions for State though...

Hagel may be a registered Republican, but that is where it ends. He and John McCain were great friends prior to 2008. When McCain ran for President, Hagel's wife sat with Michele Obama at the Democrat national convention. He later endorsed Bob Kerry in his quest to defeat republican Deb Fischer. Hagel's is no friend of the Republican Party.

McCain is still angry that he lost the election in 2008. And he still have a vendetta against the president. He is just like Cheney and won't shut up even after he leaves office.

ALSDAD made good points. And I am one Democrat who thinks Hagel would be fine in the position. The RIGHT always thinks they are right. They have to challenge everything that the president tries to do. Stalemate, after stalemate and who suffers? The people of this country. No term limits means the crap goes on and on with no accountability. Boehner is pathetic. He seems more concerned with his tan than his job.

Being a veteran with a purple heart does not give you automatic qualification to hold the office of your choice. Would you support McCain also?

The entire political system is severely broken. A Secretary of Defense should not even have a "party" designation. Everything in Washington has become a play for power and party. We continue to recycle the same politicians over and over. We don't have any term limits in Congress which allows special interests to take control of these people and move the constituents to the back of the line. The old cliche' defines the definition of insanity of doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results. It is time to clean house (and senate) and get some fresh ideas. Hagel has a lot of good in his past, but, has become a puppet that is just seeking a position of power and will do what ever is needed to obtain it.

to ..."are you kidding...." I wonder...how many Purple Hearts do you have? and do you know that fighting in Wars costs lives...unlike the Bushies did not.....they lied about their reason for taking our kids into 2 Wars. If anyone is a moron....its anyone that thinks Mr.Hagel is not qualified to hold such a position.I'll add their names to those of Sens. Grahams' and Sen.McCains'. Mr. Hagel knows the costs of War and knows the value of Diplomacy and information when guiding our Nations Troops.Something that War Monger,Dick Cheney, could never live up to.
